Emergency Orthodontic Care

Orthodontic appliances are designed to be strong and reliable, but from time to time, unexpected issues can arise. An orthodontic emergency is any situation where you’re experiencing severe discomfort, or something is poking, cutting, or causing damage inside your mouth. While not all orthodontic issues require immediate attention, some situations do need a prompt call to Ste. Marie Orthodontics.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Poking Wire

If a wire is poking the inside of your cheeks or gums, it can quickly become irritating or even painful. A temporary solution is to apply orthodontic wax over the wire or bracket that’s causing discomfort. You can also try using a pencil eraser to gently push the wire flat against your tooth. While these fixes may provide relief, it’s still important to contact our office to determine if we need to see you for a more permanent adjustment.

Loose appliance

A loose appliance, such as a band, expander, or retainer, can interfere with your treatment and potentially cause discomfort or injury. If something feels loose or seems to be falling out of place, please call Dr. Ste. Marie right away. We’ll help determine if an immediate appointment is needed or if it’s something that can wait until your next scheduled visit.

Loose bracket

Brackets can occasionally come loose, especially if you've eaten hard or sticky foods. If the bracket is still attached to the wire and isn’t causing any pain, you can use wax to stabilize it until your appointment. However, if the loose bracket is on a front tooth or you’re nearing the end of your treatment, please call us as soon as possible so we can ensure your treatment stays on track.

General Soereness

It’s completely normal to experience general soreness after getting your braces or following an adjustment. This discomfort typically goes away within a few days. We recommend taking Tylenol or the pain reliever you would normally use for a headache. Avoid hard or crunchy foods during this time, and stick to soft options like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies to ease the discomfort
